Beacon House

Beacon House is really Beacon House Interfaith Society.

The Beacon House Mission Statement:

The Mission of Beacon House is to work in a caring and compassionate manner to provide food, clothing and programs for those in our community that we can help.

Overseeing the facility since 1986 are representatives from 19 area churches. Approximately eighty volunteers, including seniors, board members, group home residents, and others, work under one full time and one part time employee.

Beacon House is the second largest of 72 member agencies (27 food banks plus soup kitchens and shelters) of Metro Food Bank (which collects and warehouses food on the Bedford Highway). We distribute about 20,000 meals a month to those who need it.

In addition to food from Metro Food Bank, and the non-perishable donations Beacon House receives, we purchase eggs, margarine and meat with the money we get from selling used clothing. We feel that parents need these items for their children. We also give clothing vouchers for those who need free clothing.

Families are eligible for one food order from a Metro Food Bank agency each thirty days. They receive a five-day supply of food for each family member. Some families visit each month, while others come less often. We are needed in this area by those who cannot provide sufficient food or clothing for their families. We have over 2400 families in the food bank registry at Beacon House, and up to 500 families using it each month (representing up to 800 children a month).

Beacon House operates in Lower Sackville from our new building at 470 Cobequid Road .

We are able to operate because people support this work with generous donations of food and money, and give us clothing to sell. We are working to pay off the $200,000 mortgage.

In the last financial year, with our clothing sales and corporate, individual, service group and church donations, we were able to cover our budget for salaries of our managers, mortgage, garbage expense, utilities and supplies and we spent $39,323.00 on food purchases. With the resources given us, we provide a wonderful service to the area.

Foods to give include canned meat or fish, baby food, pasta sauce and peanut butter.
